Foundations is a course of tuition in all genres and mediums

This course provides tuition in the principal subjects, landscape, still life, figure and portrait, in all the popular mediums.

If you are interested in exploring and developing art skills, this course will equip you with the necessary skills to address these subjects, through graded exercises aimed at bringing you quickly to a level of proficiency to allow you to join classes suited to more advanced studies in your preferred choice of subject or medium, some of which the CAW can provide.

Below is this Term’s Outline. For more general information about what Foundations offers, please download this PDF.

Content and skills

This concluding term follows the well-established sequence of content, ie. landscape, still-life, figure and portrait, but with fresh exercises building on subjects and skills practised in preceding terms.
Skills, such as composition, direct observation, extending tonal range etc, are incorporated in all exercises, while producing interesting and varied images to challenge you. However, skills involving application of alternative mediums, such as application techniques, colour mixing, and options for trying tonal underpainting, alla prima need subjects/images that have been carefully selected. They frequently lend themselves to a particular narrative vein or atmosphere. We will identify these as we go along so you can keep tags on how your skills are developing.
