ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The ability to “read the pose” is a key factor in bringing “life’ to your life drawings.
During this two day workshop, the inner dynamics of the human will be explored to discover the connection between ‘gesture’ and ‘structure’.
Via quick sketches and sustained studies using a variety of mediums beginning with charcoal and graphite, a greater understanding of the expressive qualities of line and tone will be developed; fundamental elements used by the great artists for centuries.

MATERIALS LIST & NOTES
We will work with very basic dry mediums on day one (graphite pencil, willow charcoal, charcoal pencil) with emphasis on line and linear exploration. Depending on the group’s progress, we may expand into water based mediums on day 2 (brush and ink, pen and wash, acquarelles) .
Essential materials are:
- 4B or 6B graphite pencils
- willow charcoal 6 to 8 mm thick ( not too thin)
- medium to soft charcoal pencils
- block rubber
- A2 Cartridge paper pad
- Additional A1 or A2 cheap paper ( newsprint or”butchers paper”) This workshop will involve a lot of quick drawing so a good quantity of paper is essential.
Optional materials are:
- Water soluble graphite block or pencil
- Black ‘acquarelle’ pencil or crayon, OR Artgraf Carbon Block black (water soluble)
- 25mm flat soft brush suitable for watercolours or ink
- a medium sized soft, round ‘Chinese’ brush (not bristle brushes used for oil painting)
- Conte pencils
- 2 small containers for water and mixing
- A2 or A3 Pad suitable for pen and wash or watercolour.
Noel will bring a supply of black ink as well as an assortment of brushes suitable for this type of drawing. The brushes will be on loan and the ink will be minimal cost, for $5 per person.
Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to ensure you are set up for a start at 10am sharp without interruptions.
This is a full workshop of 12, therefore it is important to set up your easels/donkeys so that there is clear passage throughout the room to allow Noel easy access to each participant. Extra bags/supplies not able to be tucked under easels/donkeys may be stored behind the model stand. During tea time, it is suggested conversations are taken out into the hallway, to allow easier access to coffee/tea/refreshments and avoid congestion near the kitchen area.
We are looking forward to welcoming Noel to our studio and a pleasurable learning experience for all attendees.
Photos for CAW use will be taken during the workshop. If you do not wish to be photographed, please step out of camera range and kindly notify the photographer. NB: Photos of life models posing nude are not be permitted.
