Models, maquettes, and dioramas have been used for centuries to assist in constructing compositions and building narratives in artworks. Painting from Models is a project that extends your skills in both observational and conceptual painting by referencing a real or imagined 3D world. You will make a model using simple materials (recycled or made specifically for the model), develop some preliminary sketches of the model, and complete one painting of any scale working from the model as inspiration.
The model can be thought of as a hypothetical realm in which a change in scale and materiality creates many aesthetic possibilities. How can a model re-present the world? How can the model operate as a subject for painting?
